New Coronavirus Workplace Social Distancing Regulations

April 6, 2020

On Tuesday 7 April 2020 new regulations come into force to protect workers during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The new regulations will mean that the two-metre social distancing rule will apply to any workplace, including homes, and outdoor spaces. All businesses will be expected to ensure the two-metre rule is maintained between their workers and that employers take all reasonable actions necessary to comply with the rule.

This regulation further emphasises the call for businesses and employers to maintain their duty of care to their employees, putting their health and wellbeing at the top of their agenda.

We are still awaiting guidance to explain exactly what can reasonably be expected of employers and businesses following the enforcement of the new rule.

The new guidance, alongside the regulations, will also clarify the arrangements for funerals and crematoriums. It appears that people will still be allowed to attend funerals provided they are the person who has organised the funeral, they have been invited to attend the funeral, or are the carer of a person who is attending the funeral. However, there will be a limit to the number of people who can attend such ceremonies, taking into account the size of the venue and the two-metre rule.

We will be updating our news pages in accordance with the Government’s guidance as hopefully more clarification will be announced.
